GCP Cost Visibility Setup

Scope

Clear boundaries for what the GCP Cost Visibility Setup includes, what it does not include, and what access is needed.

The service is intentionally narrow: cost visibility, alerts, dashboarding, recommendation review and handover.

What is included

The setup is built around practical visibility and a repeatable review habit.

  • Billing export setup or validation
  • BigQuery billing dataset and view decisions
  • Dashboard structure for service, project, SKU and trend views
  • Budget alerts and notification routing where appropriate
  • FinOps Hub recommendation review
  • CUD readiness check where the data supports it
  • Handover pack and walkthrough

What is not included

This is not a full FinOps platform implementation or a production optimisation sprint.

  • No guaranteed cost savings
  • No production infrastructure changes
  • No CUD purchases on your behalf
  • No deep BigQuery query tuning
  • No GKE rightsizing project
  • No application architecture redesign
  • No long-term managed service unless separately agreed

Access model

The default posture is minimum necessary access. I do not need persistent Project Owner access, production write access, database contents, application secrets or permission to change running workloads.

Depending on your setup, access may involve:

  • Billing export and billing account visibility
  • BigQuery dataset access for cost data
  • Dashboard setup or Looker Studio access
  • Budget and alerting configuration
  • Temporary scoped permissions that can be revoked after handover

Where possible, you run setup steps yourself and keep control of the environment.

Your responsibilities

To keep the engagement efficient, your team should be ready to provide:

  • One technical contact who understands your GCP environment
  • Approximate monthly spend and the main services in use
  • Confirmation of billing account and project structure
  • A decision maker for budget alert recipients
  • Access approval or time to run guided setup commands

Not the right fit

This is probably not the right service if you need immediate production optimisation, guaranteed savings, an enterprise FinOps platform rollout, or a full cloud cost operating model across a large organisation.
